I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there’s been an increasing trend towards plant based whole food eating these days. This idea seemed fascinating to me, but I was skeptical because I’m busy and on the go and I’m also a pretty voracious eater.
After a little bit of research, I became intrigued by the benefits of plant based eating, so I thought I would give it a try — on my terms.
Harvard medical school recently published an article about choosing the right plant based diet for you. For many of us it might seem drastic to go vegan, vegetarian, or adapting to a 100% plant based diet.
Harvard studies point out that increasing the right plant based foods in your daily diet is the right step towards heart health and better health in general.
“If embracing a full plant-based diet feels intimidating, then begin small. ‘A moderate change in your diet, such as lowering your animal food intake by one to two servings per day and replacing it with legumes or nuts as your protein source, can have a lasting positive impact on your health,’ says Dr. Satija.
Additionally, try to replace white rice with brown rice or other whole grains, and white bread with whole-grain bread. Choose oatmeal instead of processed cereal, and water instead of juice drinks.
So don’t worry about labels or restrictions, just hop on board for a commitment towards a more healthy plant based diet.
Overall try to:
1. Reduce or eliminate meat intake
2. Avoid or eliminate processed foods
3. Choose healthy plant based foods and incorporate them into your diet, 5-7 portions a day.
In this blog, I’m going to address 3 main concerns:
- Making delicious, easy plant-based, no meat recipes
- Preparing delicious, healthy meals on the go
- Preparing delicious meals that are filling so you don’t go to bed hungry
As you’ll see, not all of these 3 points will coincide in each recipe, but the main focus here is to eat more plant based foods and invest in short term and long term health.
Some of these recipes are my own, but many are contributed from friends, family and colleagues. Feel free to send in your favorite plant based or vegetarian recipe and I’ll post it with your name on it.
Join me in my quest for healthy, almost plant based eating!
